There’s a lot to do when you move into a new property: admin, NBN and utilities to move, boxes to unpack, cleaning to do, etc. But what about your keys?
Old keys can get forgotten until you decide on a new door, or they simply break or get lost. But, as an experienced Melbourne locksmith, we’d strongly recommend you replace the keys and/or locks for your new house.

You have no idea how many keys were previously cut, who had them, and if they’re all accounted for.
House keys wear out
Keys typically last 10-20 years. Consider how long the previous owner might have used their keys for. Age and heavy use might mean they haven’t got much lifespan left.
Locks wear out, too
It’s not just the keys that have a lifespan. Locks can also age. Upgrading existing old locks will offer you peace of mind and increase your security.
What if my lock is new?
You have a new lock, new door, new property, etc, and you don’t want to buy a whole new lock – that’s understandable.
A locksmith doesn’t have to replace or upgrade your lock to provide new keys and make the old ones redundant. We can ‘rekey’ your lock by changing the internal pins to work with a new key. It’s a cost-effective way to change up the security on your new property.
What’s the Best Option?
- Rekeying – If the locks are in good shape, rekeying is a quick and affordable option.
- Replacing – If locks are worn out, outdated, or not secure enough, replacing them is a better long-term investment.

From a locksmith: yes. You should change your locks when you move into a new property. Err on the side of caution and assume others might have keys to access your property.
Don’t forget: Back doors, garages, mailboxes, sheds, side gates, etc – check all entries.
